Bob Rankin - Co-ordinating The Shame On You Campaign

It is has  been quite clear from the start that May Place in particular has been seen as a valuable resource in the locality which delivers excellent care to a very vulnerable group of service users.  Its agenda fits well with the Changing Lives ethos in terms of helping these  people remain in their own homes and supports their carers achieve the best outcomes for them.

I have serious concerns that the Cabinet appear to have been asked to make a decision without any consultation with May Place having taken place. There has been no formal notification of the proposals and no consultation or consultation timetable. I do not believe that the County Council had complied with the rules on consultation identified by the Audit Commission.

I believe that any plans for EMI within the County have been scrapped and the exercise is purely related to cost saving to enable them to build a £25 million Arts Centre in Stafford and new County Buildings to replace existing £65 million* in total.

In my view, they jeopardised the lives of the most vulnerable people in our society, who no longer have a voice and they may possibly have violated their human rights.

*I was present at the full Staffordshire County Council Budget meeting on the 15th February 2007, as an observer in the Visitors Gallery in County Buildings. During the debate the on the "Changing Lives" Agenda, the opposition brought up the proposed development of the new county building to replace the historic County Building costing £40 million  and the proposed Stafford Arts Centre a further £25 million.

Ask yourselves how can they justify this at the cost of human lives...! None would be my answer!

E-mailing a Staffordshire County Councillor and ask them:

Email (copy and paste) a councillor and ask them these questions:

1. Can you explain why May Place Newcastle - Staffordshire's only
dedicated Dementia & Alzheimer's Disease Day Care Centre has been
excluded from the consultation exercise?

2. How can your colleagues in the cabinet have made an informed decision
by excluding this pioneering Centre of Excellence and Best Practice in Elderly Mentally Infirm (EMI)?

3. What Happened To Changing Lives – Older People Change Strategy Project Plan?

4. Have you thought about resigning now your own party has disowned you?

Richard Gorton & David Leech promised not to support "Changing Lives Programme". Why not ask them ... what made them change their minds!
