Subject: RE: Changing Lives Vision - The Closing of May Place Newcastle -
Staffordshire's ONLY Day Cay Centre for Dementia & Alzheimer's Disease
Dear Mr Rankin - thanks for your email on Changing Lives and the Closure of May Place. Since the announcement last week that Staffordshire County Council proposed to bring forward the closure dates for its residential homes and Day Care Centres, I have tried to establish how the Authority proposes to provide care and support for the elderly and disabled. Yesterday I had a meeting with the Deputy Leader of the Council, John Taylor, on this issue and this morning I attended a meeting of the County Council's Cabinet during which a petition signed by 3000 residents of Newcastle complaining about the closure proposals was presented. I have to report that I'm still very unclear how Staffordshire County Council proposes to manage these new care arrangements. At present there does not appear to be alternatives in place to support the people who use County Council day care services. Until I am certain that acceptable alternatives are in place, I will not support the County Council's proposals.
Regards
Richard Gorton
Ask Richard Gorton what made him change his mind? Where are the acceptable alternatives? Perhaps he thinks that assistive technology and direct payments are acceptable alternatives!
