May Place offers a personal programme of care, based on a comprehensive assessment of an individuals needs and those of their carers. This comprehensive assessment has been pioneered at May Place and it has been recognised as an example of Best Practice for the care of the Elderly Mentally Infirm. Up until the Changing Lives Programme it was had been used as the model for all EMI care within Staffordshire County Social Services. Under Changing Lives it is to be scrapped despite being the foundation for the Homestead [May Place] EMI Resource with no tried and tested alternatives to replace it.
Shame On You Staffordshire County Council
May Place positively encourages carers to participate in their
planning and reviewing of all services. Under Changing Lives - May Place has
been excluded from all the consultation processes
May Place offers a structured programme pioneered in-house
specialising in a wide range of small group activities which include mental,
physical, creative and social stimulation. Under the Changing
Lives Programme all this is scrapped and EMI sufferers go back to social
isolation in their own homes. Despite being the foundation for Newcastle's EMI
Resource Centre ...the Homestead [May Place] EMI Resource Centre!
May Place have installed a "Snoezelen*" which is a multi-sensory room. This room
provides therapeutic treatment which helps to relieve tensions and reduce stress
and anxiety. Under the Changing Lives Programme all this is scrapped and
EMI sufferers go back to social isolation in their own homes... with Assistive
Technology instead as a substitute for Newcastle's EMI Resource Centre
*Snoezelen or controlled multisensory stimulation is used for
people with (severe) mental disabilities, and involves exposing them to a
soothing and stimulating environment, the "snoezelen room". These rooms are
specially designed to deliver stimuli to various senses, using lighting effects,
colour, sounds, music, scents, etc. The combination of different materials on a
wall may be explored using tactile senses, and the floor may be adjusted to
stimulate the sense of balance.
Recent research tends to prove obvious need to retain centres of EMI excellence such as May Place - Comment from the Alzheimer’s Society on the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease and loneliness and a study in the Archives of General Psychiatry...
