May Place Day Care Centre
It is has been quite clear from the start that May
Place in particular has been seen as a valuable resource in Newcastle under Lyme
and Staffordshire which delivers excellent care to a very vulnerable group of
elderly mentally ill people.
Its agenda fits well with the Changing Lives ethos in terms of helping the
service users remain
in their own homes and supports us their carers achieve the best outcomes for
them... So why is it being closed?
Monday 20th August 2007... Success for the Shame On You
Team and Campaign! Councillor Susan Woodward in a meeting today has acknowledged
that May Place Day Care Centre
is a Centre of Excellence...

New: [Shame On You Exclusive] Is the motion true? Apparently not ex-Labour Newcastle Councillor Michael Dolman confirms that there was no such motion on the 2nd February 2007! Newcastle Labour Party Web Open Motion - "If David Leech, Richard Gorton and others were aware of this motion! It begs the question how could they have possibly voted for it on the 15th February?"
After this tissue of lies, how can you ever again trust these people!

or Project 008 The consultation exercise that never took place:
"The main thrust of the consultation framework is to encourage and
enable
stakeholders to engage in the process of developing the vision of what services
might look like within each locality. To this end, local area profiles are being
developed for each locality which will show current and proposed service
changes including opportunities for joint working with a range of partners. The
framework will include how the above units could be re-provided. The objective
is to ’paint a picture’ of how services could look in the future but which will
stimulate discussion with stakeholders and encourage their contribution to the
design of that picture rather than presenting a blueprint of how services will
be
provided." May Place stakeholders are still waiting!!

May Place Day Care Centre has been recognised as a Centre of Excellence
and Best Practice. It is Staffordshire's only specialist day care centre for
Dementia & Alzheimer's Disease suffers. It is the Staffordshire County
Council Model for the day care of the Elderly Mentally Infirm (EMI)
and every other day care centre and home is based upon this model.
May Place Day Centre first opened its doors in 1987 to the frail, vulnerable and confused people who often experience memory difficulties, depression and social isolation. The concept behind it was to provide a welcoming, comfortable and supportive atmosphere where people who come feel secure at all times.
Under Changing Lives this goes, despite being previously briefed that
we were to be re-designated as Newcastle's EMI Resource Centre! But now with nothing to
replace it...! Certainly not in the Private Sector! No money in EMI day care
provision...
otherwise it would have done a long time ago!
The culture is one where they respect people's rights and personal choice and where the staff can respond sensitively to emotional and physical needs.
Where is the respect under Changing Lives!
May Place's Day Care plays an important part with its range of EMI services that
are all brought together to enable individuals to remain in their homes and stay
within the community for as long as possible. "Why Staffordshire County
Council wants to close May Place down is a question of economics not people.
The County Council wants a new office and an arts centre and in order to
fund these projects cuts have to be made!"
These unfeeling cuts are being
made to the Elderly Mentally Infirm who no longer have the voice to protest!
The Shame On You Campaign is a way of giving them a voice to protest at the injustice of this shameful programme. Please Support the Shame On You Campaign!
